INTRODUCTION
The things that you can see as a passenger when watching pilots and flight attendants at work is just the tip of the iceberg. In fact, pilots are actually trained for handling all sorts of emergencies and special situations.
THE FLIGHT SIMULATOR
What can it do and how does it work? It`s a full-size replica of the cockpit of a Boeing 737NG aircraft with hundreds of switches and displays, using MS Flight Simulator. The monster needs five PCs and three projectors to run. And you can see it all in action!
PILOTS AND CHECKLISTS
While flying a practice flight around Ferihegy (Budapest, Hungary), you can find out why a big aircraft is flown by two pilots. The documentary also explains MCC (Multi-Crew Management) and why checklists are vital and compulsory.
LANDING IN CROSSWIND
Although not an emergency, landing in heavy crosswind required a special technique. Our pilots have to cope with an extremely strong crosswind of 40 knots in the simulator, and land safely at the airport in Stuttgart, Germany.
LANDING IN THICK FOG (CAT III)
Modern airliners can land safely in very poor visibility. Landing procedures fall into different categories based on visibility. In this part, you can see an automatic CAT IIIb approach and landing performed in the simulator. Destination: Ferihegy Airport, Budapest, Hungary.
GO AROUND
What happens if a landing at the airport in Munich, Germany, has to be aborted in the last moment because another aircraft is on the runway? The procedure called "GO AROUND" is rarely performed in real life, but when the time comes, fast and proper execution is critical in the cockpit.
ABORTED TAKEOFF (engine fire before V1)
What to do when there is an engine fire during takeoff? Can you abort the takeoff? Up to what point? What is the speed called "V1" is important? What systems help you stop the aircraft on the remaining runway and how to prepare for an aborted takeoff?
FIRE DURING TAKEOFF, LANDING WITH ONE ENGINE (engine fire after V1)
Sometimes your only option is to take off even if one of the engines is on fire. In the simulator, our pilots has to cope with engine fire in the air and return to the departure airport for a single-engine landing. Let`s see what procedures they follow and how they work together to address the situation and land safely.
FIRE IN THE WHEEL-WELL AND A HYDRAULICS PROBLEM�(loss of hydraulic system B)
In this imaginary situation, the wheel-well catches fire and one of the hydraulic systems is also damaged in flight. But how can you put out fire in the wheel-well without a fire extinguisher? And how can you make up for the loss of the hydraulic system that moves the wing flaps? What`s more, the weather is far from being perfect in Bratislava, Slovakia...
ENGINE FAILURE AND RESTART IN FLIGHT (Crossbleed start)
A jet engine might just stop or "flame out". Let`s find out more about the two restart procedures called "windmill start" and "crossbleed start" and see how an engine failure is tackled during flight.
GLIDING IN AN AIRLINER (loss of thrust on both engines!)
Many people believe that the most important part of an aircraft is the engine, and if it stops, there`s no hope for survival. In a simulated scenario, flying over the Greek islands, our pilots have to face their worst nightmare - a dual engine failure. What follows is excellent teamwork and a truly amazing (and very quiet) landing...
LANDING IN INNSBRUCK
Innsbruck in Austria is located in a valley surrounded by mountains. The approach to Innsbruck is spectacular but also very hard because the airport is located in a deep valley.
LANDING IN MADEIRA
Madeira is a Portuguese island in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Africa. The airport in the town called Funchal has a 2770 metre runway. The airport itself is unique and quite infamous. Only pilots with special simulator training are allowed to land here.
